The Albemarle County Police Department joined more than 100 police forces across the world in a Global Police Tweet-a-Thon Friday.
Viewers had a chance to virtually tag along with an animal control officer.
First thing Friday morning, the officer rescued 13 kittens and cats that had been left in a cage. Animal control also went to Chris Green Lake to check on whether owners put dogs on leashes while they walked them to the park.
ACPD Spokesperson Carter Johnson rode with animal control, responded to calls, and tweeted from the scene in real-time.
“It is a virtual ride-along so you are getting to see play-by-play what it is like to be responding to these calls for service and what officers face on a typical day,” said Johnson.
Officers also responded to a deer that had been injured.
Johnson says the event helps people know where to turn to in an emergency when other modes of communication are down.
