City of Harrisonburg Press Release
Harrisonburg, VA – The City of Harrisonburg will be hosting a public information meeting next week todiscuss the upcoming Harrisonburg Streetscape Project that will take place in downtown.
On Monday, June 30 at 5:30 p.m. a preconstruction public information meeting is scheduled to take place at the Massanutten Regional Library, 174 S. Main St. City staff, Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance (HDR), and Faulconer Construction, the selected general contractor, will facilitate this meeting.
The City of Harrisonburg is excited to partner with HDR, the downtown restaurants and merchants, and Faulconer Construction to enhance the already beautiful downtown area.
“It is our primary goal to keep those directly impacted by the construction informed of the progress of this project,” said Tom Hartman, Assistant Director of Public Works.
In the winter, the project bid that was received came in above the city’s budgeted amount. City staff reworked the scope of the project and later received a successful bid within budget. The only major change will be the length of the project, which will now end at Court Square, instead of continuing to Elizabeth Street as originally proposed.
Phase 2, “Our Next Steps,” of the Harrisonburg Streetscape Project will take place on the west side of Main Street from Bruce Street to Court Square. Improvements that will be made include sidewalk reconstruction, addition of curb ramps, the replacement of the existing traffic signals with decorative traffic and pedestrian signals, improved lighting, and landscaping. All improvements during this phase will match and compliment the work that was completed during Phase I.
This project will cost approximately $1.1 million and is funded by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Transportation Enhancement Funds and city funds. Construction will begin the week of July 7 and crews anticipate the project to be completed by the end of 2014.
