Despite Wednesday night's loss, the University of Virginia baseball team was treated to a hero's welcome Thursday night at Davenport Field.
Hundreds came out - clad in orange and blue and armed with pom-poms and banners - to welcome the team back to Charlottesville with a special ceremony, with cheering, food, and an address from the team to the crowd. The UVA faithful say, while they may not be College World Series champions, the players are all winners.
"They are amazing. They made us so proud. They are top-notch, and we are going to make them know how much we love them tonight,” said one fan, Ann Michel.
That sentiment was echoed by every fan at Davenport Thursday night, welcoming the team back from Omaha.
"There's no words to explain it,” said UVA fan Sherri Lawson. “It's a bittersweet moment."
UVA fell to Vanderbilt University 3-2, but that was just the end of what fans see as an overall successful season for the Cavaliers.
“They fought so hard and were absolutely amazing and showed what they could do and what they’re made of,” Michel said.
