VIA Program Helps Students Transition to Public School

Posted: Updated:

A new program at the Virginia Institute for Autism is helping one student transition back into the public school system.

Ryan Kidd is one of the first students to be enrolled in the new program, geared toward higher-functioning students. His mother says he developed his social skills while there, and the school is even helping in the transition.

"The teachers are going to go out with Ryan to the public school and they are going to work with the public school system to incorporate what they have learned about Ryan here and what Ryan has learned into the school system that he will be attending,” said Kelly Kidd, Ryan’s mother.

Thanks to his better social skills, Ryan was able to compete in Scottsville's Little Mr. Firefighter pageant this year, and won. Now he will be featured in the town's Fourth of July parade.
