Work is underway to patch up the Belmont Bridge in Charlottesville after cracks surfaced on the sidewalk and roadbed.
An engineer for the city says hot weather caused the asphalt to expand, but the city says the damage does not pose any danger.
Crews were working to fill in those gaps Thursday with patching. The patching is just temporary while the city works through replacement options for the Belmont Bridge.
Crews set up a sign where they were working, telling pedestrians to use the other sidewalk. The sidewalk on the other side of the street, however, is also closed, forcing people to walk in traffic in order to cross the bridge.
