Albemarle County Public Schools Press Release
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – Members of the Albemarle County School Board have an important upcoming decision. They will be appointing two members of the community to serve on the school division’s Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee. The Committee, which includes volunteers from each of the school division’s magisterial districts as well as an at-large representative, advises the superintendent and the School Board on how best to plan for and meet future facility requirements, such as changes in student enrollment.
Over the past five years, for example, student enrollment in the division has increased by more than 400 students and is projected to jump by another 235 students over the next two years.
Among the issues the committee regularly reviews are school capacity, enrollment projections, transportation and operating efficiencies for schools, redistricting, priorities in the school division’s capital improvement program, financing and construction strategies, and impact of technology on learning spaces.
The committee meets on a quarterly basis and as needed on special occasions. Currently, there are two vacancies: the at-large seat, for which any resident of the county is eligible, and the Rio District representative, who must reside in that district.
The committee includes 12 members, seven of whom are appointed by members of the school board, four appointed by the superintendent, and one appointed upon the recommendation of the Equity and Diversity Committee. Appointees are asked to attend a minimum of 75 percent of all meetings and to have experience or interests in one or more of the following areas: planning and development; demographics; economics, school programs and needs; public outreach and communications; or building design and construction.
Residents who are interested in serving on the committee are asked to fill out an application that can be downloaded at:
The application should be sent to Ms. Jennifer Johnston, Clerk of the School Board, by postal mail at 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville, VA 22902; by email to email@example.com; or by fax to 434-296-5869.
