Waynesboro Parks & Rec Asks for Feedback on Coyner Springs

WAYNESBORO, Va (WVIR) -

Coyner Springs Park in Waynesboro has a pavilion, a stream, and some trails It also hosts annual events like the Mad Anthony Mud Run and Kite Day – but that's about it. So now park representatives are wondering if there's more they should offer and they're asking for your feedback.

Tom Tiencken and his white German shepherd Maggie have been enjoying Coyner Springs Park for about a year.

“Almost every day throughout the whole winter and everything, we were out here blazing trails, cutting trails and stuff like that. Enjoyed every minute of it,” Tiencken said.

Tiencken, a retired mail carrier, says he's made countless friends on the trails. “I know people come from Charlottesville, people that come from Staunton,” he said.

But Spencer Eavers with Waynesboro Parks and Recreation suggests Coyner Springs is underused. So the department is looking for feedback from the people in the form of a survey, with two goals in mind.

“Not only make the community more aware of this amazing resource that's out here, but figure out how to make it so that they would utilize it better,” Eavers said.

Eavers reveals in early feedback that many people reject the idea of too much development. “I would assume they don't mean a large playground structure, lots more asphalt out here for parking and baseball fields,” Eavers said. “They want to see it stay a green open space.”

And Tiencken agrees. But, he says, if he had to change something, he would add “water stations for the dogs up on top, at different corners and maybe a bench. And a place for more doggie bags and stuff like that that we can put their waste in.”

And while Coyner Springs Park could look different in the future, one thing is for sure: Tiencken and Maggie will keep coming back. “Always. I will unless they chase me out of here,” he said.

Park representatives confirmed they are getting ready to put in a brand-new disc golf course. If you have more ideas you can fill out a survey that will be available until the end of July.
