Sentara Martha Jefferson Monday: What is the Role of a Nurse Practitioner in the Hospital?

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -

This week marks National Nurse Practitioner week, so we are celebrating alongside of caregivers at Sentara Martha Jefferson.

“I got to a point in my career where I wanted to take my clinical performance to the next level,” said Caroline Mateja, one of many nurse practitioners who work at the hospital.

Mateja, and the other nurse practitioners are all trained at a masters level and fall between physicians and nurses in terms of the scope of the care they can provide.

“As nurse practitioners, we bring to the setting of the treatment team a foundation of caring for different illnesses and diseases from our nursing background,” noted nurse practitioner Jenny Hall.

It is important to know that nurse practitioners work hand in hand with doctors on a daily basis. “We communicate throughout the day, multiple times about every patient so we’re always on the same page,” noted Mateja.

Together – the two can provide complete care for patients during their hospital stay. “We come together as a team to bring about the whole spectrum of care,” noted Hall.

While patients will see both nurse practitioners as well as the doctor during their stay, nurse practitioners can provide added support and typically spend more time with patients, which is beneficial to everyone.

“I love the autonomy that I have to talk with patients and educate them about what’s going on in their care and what to expect,” noted Hall. “I take away a piece of comfort in that as well knowing that my patients understand.”
