The Rivanna Conservation Society is formally launching a new program focused on patrolling the Rivanna River.

The Rivanna River Stewards will act as the eyes and ears of the group throughout the watershed.  One of their main goals is to engage people in the care and protection of the water as they paddle along.

Dan Triman and Justin Altice take their boats out onto the river at least once a week. The pair performs a variety of tasks which include picking up trash, monitoring the water quality through different tests, and taking photos to document what they see.  They want to keep people informed and work with community members to improve the overall health of the river.

“The more we talk to people and people know about what we do and why it's important to have healthy rivers, there are more advocates for keeping this clean and then we're not doing all the work but everybody else is joining together to make everything successful," Triman stated.

If you are interested in this type of work to protect the Rivanna River, Rivanna Conservation Society also has a river guardians program made up of volunteers who adopt a certain section of the river as their own to monitor.
