Toscano Speaks Out after Calling for Puckett Investigation
RICHMOND, Va (WVIR) -
Politics has always been a full-contact sport where throwing an elbow or two comes with the territory. But what's been going on in Richmond, Delegate David Toscano says, may have crossed the line from dirty politics to something worse.
After Senator Phillip Puckett's surprise resignation, Delegate David Toscano called for an investigation.
"Whether it's a criminal offense or not, I don't know. But it certainly doesn't smell right,” Toscano said.
Puckett left before his term was up, right in the middle of a budget stalemate, stirring up a lot of controversy.
"The Senate automatically flipped to Republican control and any chance to get Medicaid expansion, which was the number one priority of the governor and the Democrats, was put at risk,” Toscano said.
Toscano says Puckett’s resignation caused problems, and now he says it's time for some answers.
"People are saying was there a deal cut - a deal for a judgeship for his daughter, a deal for him to get a job,” Toscano said. “Those circumstances are troubling enough that some kind of inquiry or investigation is justified."
Now Toscano hopes, if there is an investigation, it will give people a better idea what happened. “I think the public has a right to know any time a prominent sitting senator resigns under circumstances like this what actually happened. And then they can make their own decision about whether it was right or not,” he said.
NBC29 reached out to both the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office. Both say they can neither confirm nor deny any investigation is taking place.
