Getting out and enjoying Albemarle County parks this summer is easier than ever with a new web tool that lets you blaze a trail before you even leave the house.
The Terrain360 website provides park patrons with a panoramic tour of trails in six Albemarle County parks. Using Google Maps ground display, the site gives users a taste of more than 60 miles of outdoor trails in the county. This allows users to look ahead and see how difficult and how long a trail will be, and what views to expect.
The six county parks currently featured were chosen specifically.
“I think they went to some of the more popular parks first, like Preddy Creek is one of our really popular trail park natural areas, so I think they tried to hit the more popular spots first and then they'll eventually work their way around to some of the other lesser-known parks,” said Tucker Rollins, trail maintenance supervisor for Albemarle County Parks and Recreation.
Trails found in Ivy Creek Natural Area, Walnut Creek Park, and Mint Springs Park are also featured on the virtual map.
Rollins says a mobile app for Terrain360 may be on the way.
