Cavaliers Will Lead With Ace in College World Series
Nathan Kirby has a 1.73 ERA this season
OMAHA, NE (WVIR) -
UVa left-handed pitcher Nathan Kirby will start for the 'Hoos against Mississippi in the College World Series Sunday night.
Kirby says, "I'd like to think I'm hard to hit, I've got a good fast ball and a good slider and hope I can get that past people."
Kirby has a 1.73 ERA but he's coming off his worst outing of the year giving up just five runs on seven hits to Maryland in just 4.2 IP.
Junior first baseman Mike Papi says, "If he ended his year on that outing he probably wouldn't have been very happy so he's definitely looking to end his college career on a high note and we're extremely happy to have him out there on the mound for us."
Mississippi will start its ace right-handed pitcher Chris Ellis.
He has a 2.45 ERA.
The 'Hoos feel the ballpark here in Omaha plays into its favor because the dimensions are similar to Davenport Field.
Fisher says, "We've got a lot of guys 1 through 9 that can handle the bat, if we need to bunt or put the ball in the gap we can handle that and every now and then we'll put one over the fence for you, but this park definitely plays to our advantage."
Papi says, "It's definitely not a hitter's park for sure, It's pretty much the same dimensions we have at home and the wind is blowing straight in, its going to be one of those weeks where you have to cut your swing down and take what the pitcher gives you and scratch across a couple runs."
UVa and Mississippi play Sunday at 8pm.
