The Albemarle boys lacrosse team will be playing for a state championship this weekend, as the Patriots take on Loudoun County in the 5A state finals.

Albemarle advanced to the title match with an 8-6 win against Loudoun Valley earlier this week.

The Patriots are 19-1 on the season.

They did win the title as part of 'The Invitational Lacrosse Tournament' back in 1977, but Albemarle will be going for its first VHSL state championship this weekend.

Senior Matt Crist says, "None of us have ever made it to the championship. Ever since my brother played, they made it to the Final Four a few times, but they were never able to get to this game. That's what you work for for four years, really. We're one game away from our ultimate goal."

Head coach David King adds, "Those guys deserve everything that they've put in, the effort, and the offseason work. It's a special group. I'm glad they're going to get a chance to play in the state showcase game. I know they've come out and play hard, win or lose. We have talent, and we're going to give it our best effort."

Albemarle and Loudoun County were scheduled to play in the championship game Saturday, but the match has been moved to Sunday at 2:15 at Lake Braddock High School due to weather concerns.

The Patriots boys soccer team has also been pushed back a day, as Albemarle will now play Mills Goodwin in the semifinals Saturday at noon at Lake Braddock.

The winner of that game will play the winner of Broad Run and Hickory in the finals Sunday at seven o'clock at Robinson High School.

5A and 6A are the only levels worried about the raindrops.

The Western Albemarle boys soccer team is still scheduled to face Culpeper County in the 3A state semifinals Friday at two o'clock at Amherst High School.

Riverheads will take on Martinsville in the 2A semi's at Salem High School at one o'clock.

The Madison County baseball team will look to keep its postseason run going, as the Mountaineers take on Virginia High Friday at 10 am at Kiwanis Park in Salem.
