MADISON COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -

A Waynesboro man is dead after the car he was in spun off the roadway on a curve in Madison County.

Thursday, 27-year-old James Anthony Tubbs of Waynesboro and 22-year-old Kimberly Erin Schwaner of Charlottesville were in the 2002 Toyota four-door vehicle on Route 231 a mile south of Hughes River Road around 9:14 a.m. when it ran off the road and into a tree. Tubbs died at the scene and Schwaner was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Virginia State Police Sgt. F.L. Tyler says speed was a main factor in the crash, even though the driver may not have been driving over the posted speed limit at the time of the accident. Both Schwaner and Tubbs were wearing seatbelts.
