The University of Virginia baseball team beat Maryland 11-2 to advance to the College World Series for the third time in the last six years.
UVA took the field as the favorite to win in the sold-out match-up against the Maryland Terrapins. More than 5,000 fans poured into the stands at Davenport Field in Charlottesville ready to cheer on their team Monday night, covered in orange and blue. One decked-out fan said she’s a high school principal, but had already taken Tuesday off from work because she had faith in the ’Hoos.
“This hat – I promised I’d be here today because this never lost a championship game,” she said.
But some fans say the best part of the experience is watching a good team battle it out with good company.
“The best part is knowing the guys. We come every game, so get a relationship with the team and the guys and the spirit,” said Butch Houchens. “It's a great stadium. It's a great place to be.”
The next stop for the Virginia Cavaliers is Omaha.
