Mobile App Aids Orange Emergency Responders

Posted: Updated:
A smartphone app - called STEMISend - is helping emergency responders in Orange County get heart attack patients into surgery much faster.
The app sends a high-resolution image of the patient's data to doctors so they're able to start diagnosing before the patient even arrives at the hospital.

"This program does something that's existing already, but it does it in a very cheap and reliable way by using a simple smartphone,” said Tom Joyce of Orange County Fire and EMS.

The app was developed by researchers at the University of Virginia.

Emergency responders say the app is especially helpful in the rural counties. Orange County is still testing things out but the app is ready to be used anytime.
