UVa Beats Arkansas 9-2; Advances to Super Regionals

Posted: Updated:
The Virginia baseball team will play in Super Regionals for the 5th time in the last six years, after beating Arkansas 9-2 in the Regional Final at Davenport Field Sunday night.

UVa will host Maryland in a three-game series for Super Regionals, after the Terps upset host South Carolina in the Columbia Regional

John La Prise went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Cavaliers against the Razorbacks Sunday night, while Mike Papi and Joe McCarthy each scored twice.

Derek Fisher had a game-high four RBI.

Virginia broke open a scoreless game by scoring six runs with two outs in the 3rd inning.

La Prise says, "In the 3rd, everyone was being aggressive. Everyone was taking really good swings. Hitting is contagious. We batted through the lineup, all the way around.  I got up a second time. When people are being aggressive, good things happen."

Brandon Waddell pitched 6.2 innings for UVa, scattering seven hits, while allowing two runs, and striking out four.

Junior catcher Nate Irving says, "The rhythm that we pitched with this weekend was really, really good. All three guys, Artie Lewicki, Nathan Kirby, and Brandon Waddell were able to get in a really good rhythm, and they didn't come out of it. Baseball is a momentum sport. We were able to take the momentum all three games, and keep it on our side, and that's a credit to our starting pitching."

Whit Mayberry pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Wahoos, giving up just one hit, while striking out two batters.

Maryland and Virginia only played once this season, with the Terps upsetting the Wahoos 7-6 in the first game of the ACC Tournament.
