South Street Parking Prompts Safety Concerns

Posted: Updated: Jun 01, 2014 07:15 PM
People who live in one downtown Charlottesville apartment building want the city to get rid of on-street parking which they blame for creating a dangerous blind spot.

The neighbors in Midway Manor plan to take their street crossing safety concerns to Charlottesville City Council during a public hearing Monday night.

The city already closed off six parking spaces on South Street because people say they couldn't see when they would try to cross the street. Now, neighbors say they want those spaces gone for good.

Diana Souza Castro says it's happened more than once. She's tried to cross South Street and almost got hit by a car. “These cars coming flying down here,” she said.

Neighbors blame the danger on parallel parking spaces outside the Midway Manor apartment building.

“It was like a blind spot there.” said Earl Butler a Midway Manor resident.

The city closed off six of the spaces in May. Now, Council has to decide what to do permanently about the parking on this South Street curve.

Some of the people who live in Midway Manor have called for a new crosswalk, but a city report says that idea is off the table. That’s mostly because there's another crosswalk just up the street. Souza-Castro says that crosswalk is too far away for many of her neighbors.

“We were told we're not really supposed to cross here, or cross up there, we have a lot of disabled people in here,” said Souza-Castro.
The neighbors have already had their own meetings to talk about the safety concerns. They're expecting a big showing for Monday night's public hearing on the parking issue.
