Kirby Dominates Razorbacks; UVa Improves to 2-0 in Regional
Nathan Kirby stuck out the last five batters he faced
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
The Virginia baseball won its second game of the NCAA Regional at Davenport Field Saturday night, as UVa topped Arkansas 3-0.
Sophomore Nathan Kirby was dominating on the mound, giving up just one hit while striking out nine over eight shutout innings.
Kirby struck out the last five batters he faced.
Head coach Brian O'Connor says, "Nathan Kirby again showed how great of a pitcher he is."
"I was throwing the pitch that was called," said Kirby. "There wasn't much past that. I kind of got in a groove there, and whatever he put down, I was throwing a lot of strikes, and put all the pressure on them."
Mike Papi started the game with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 1st inning, and Kenny Towns added an RBI single in the 3rd.
O'Connor says, "That was one of the more complete ballgames that we've played all year. What we did offensively in the first three innings, I was really impressed. Our guys were locked in, certainly up there taking good swings and battling."
The Cavaliers move to the winners bracket finals with the victory, and would advance to Super Regionals for the 5th time in the last six years with a win Sunday night.
The Razorbacks will play Bucknell Sunday at 1pm for the right to face Virginia at 8pm.
