Lawrence Gaughan Candidate for the Fifth District Congressional Seat

FLUVANNA COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -

We now know who will challenge two term incumbent Republican Robert Hurt for the Fifth District congressional seat.

Democrats selected an actor from Charlottesville as their candidate at a nominating convention Saturday in Fluvanna County.

Democrats nominated Lawrence Gaughan. He will run against Republican Robert Hurt in November's midterm elections.

Gaughan says the biggest challenge in the coming months will be getting people out to vote.

“A lot of it comes down to being able to connect with people, look them in the eye, and tell them your silence is not sending any message to people in Washington” said Gaughan.

The newly nominated Democratic candidate for Congress in Virginia's Fifth District says that's his trick to getting people to the polls this November.

Delegates elected Lawrence Gaughan at Saturday's Fifth District Democratic Convention at Fluvanna County High School.

Gaughan defeated Ben Hudson, a teacher and former army officer. Delegates voted and organizers had results on the spot.

Gaughan is an actor and founder of a nonprofit. In his acceptance speech, he had tough words for Republican Congressman Robert Hurt.

“We're going to put Robert Hurt to task and make him lose his job this November” stated Gaughan.

Now with the ballot set Democratic Party leaders say they have a difficult road ahead to November's general election.

The biggest challenge is the way the district stretches from front royal all the way to Danville so it's a big area to cover” said Gaughan.

The other challenge for Gaughan comes down to his opponent. Robert Hurt is a two term incumbent. He won the Fifth District by a 12 and a half point margin two years ago.

Election Day is November 4.
