More than 250 women got a one-of-a-kind workout at the University of Virginia Friday night. The spirited crew got a hands-on lesson in football led by men's coach Mike London.
It was a different kind of ladies night for the women who participated, decked out in blue and orange.
“We get to pass catches from quarterbacks, and we get to practice tackling and we get to some of the different drills that the players do,” said one participant, Peggy Law.
Hundreds of ladies laced up their sneakers and hit the indoor practice fields at UVA for this year's Mike London Football Camp. The sea of participants has grown every year, with campers bringing family and friends to join the fun.
For the first time, a group of familiar faces stopped by to share some tips and skills. This year, some UVA football players took part in the camp.
London says he hopes the campers can leave with a better appreciation of the game.
“The best part is just watching those ‘aha’ moments. Sometimes the ladies, they hear about something. They watch it happen on the field or on TV but when you're here and you're explaining it, it makes the correlation between what they thought they know, what they saw and they go, ‘Ah, OK. That's what that means,’” London said.
Prizes were also raffled off at the end of the night.
Many of the women say this is a great way to get geared up for the official football season.
