A suspicious pipe at Monticello Memorial Park caused state police to bring a bomb disposal robot to the scene Friday afternoon.
It all started around 4 p.m., when Albemarle County police say they were called to the scene by staff who found an object resembling a pipe bomb on the property.
The object turned out to be a PVC pipe with a cap on both ends, filled with compressed air. Police say the robot applied heat to the pipe, causing it to explode.
"They deployed their robot and was able to disrupt the PVC pipe and found inside of it was what appeared to be, like a painter's paint roller, the head of a paint roller,” said Albemarle County Police Captain Greg Jenkins.
Police say they don't know how the object got on the property, but at this time they do not plan to conduct a criminal investigation.
