Cantor Pressured from Both Sides on Immigration

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is getting pressured from both sides over immigration as his Republican primary election nears and the window for legislative action narrows.

Cantor was attacked over the issue at dueling news conferences Wednesday. One was held by his tea party opponent, Dave Brat, and the other by Democratic congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, a lead proponent of overhauling immigration laws.

Brat called Cantor a top cheerleader for, quote, "amnesty."

Gutierrez had the opposite message - he accused Cantor of being a chief obstacle to House action on immigration legislation 11 months after the Senate passed a far-reaching bill.

Cantor recently sent a flier to voters in his district touting his opposition to "amnesty" even as he's continued to insist he supports certain narrowly tailored immigration measures.
