Another candidate is throwing his hat in the ring for Fluvanna County sheriff.

Albemarle County police veteran Mark Belew officially joined the race Tuesday, announcing his candidacy in front of the old courthouse in Palmyra. He is challenging the interim sheriff, Eric Hess.

Belew grew up in Fluvanna County.

“It's something I've thought about for a long time over my 15-year career. I think now the opportunity afforded me to be able to come back to Fluvanna County, to work in the community I grew up in and hopefully give something back,” Belew said.

Fluvanna's former sheriff, Ryant Washington, left the job earlier this year to join Virginia's Alcoholic Beverage Control board.

Belew is currently a member of the Internet Crimes Task Force in Albemarle County. He will face Hess in a special election in November.
