A Charlottesville teacher is being honored by one of the top universities in the country.

Each year the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hands out an Inspirational Teacher Award. Dr. Matt Shields, a physics teacher at Charlottesville High School, is one of this year's recipients.

A former student of his, who is now a student at MIT, nominated him. Monday, students in his science club presented him with the award at their end-of-the-year picnic.

“To have a student that's at MIT articulate what they got out of my class and working with me through the science club, how that's benefited them, how that's affected them, means a ton,” said Shields.

This year MIT presented 24 Inspirational Teacher Awards worldwide.
