Dozens of Veterans Honored by the Organization Parade Rest

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of veterans were honored Sunday in downtown Charlottesville by the organization Parade Rest.

The event at the Paramount Theater featured a showing of the movie "Patton."

Before the movie began, there was a ceremony for the 17 WWII veterans in the audience.

Each of those veterans also received a special gift in return for sharing their memories.

Glenn Rust, the chair of Parade Rest said, "We're actually giving them a nickel for their story, and we're going to contact them and get some of their stories that we can archive it in the Parade Rest archives. We don't want to lose their memories and we don't to lose what they experienced and what they did."

Those nickels were each minted in 1944 and are made of mostly silver, since nickel was in high demand at the time.
