Saturday several Boy Scout troops began Memorial Day weekend by remembering those who have died in service to our country. Troop 36 out of Charlottesville organized the scouts to place flags next to the graves of veterans at Riverview Cemetery.
The scouts say it helps them realize how many people from their own community fought for the freedoms they enjoy every day.
Life scout Corbin Staton said, "It shows just how long people have been fighting for our country, and how many have come from our community. It's how we celebrate our Memorial Day, is coming out here and putting flags on the graves and showing our thanks.”
In addition to helping the scouts remember veterans, troop leaders say their hope is that it will help others in the community stop and reflect when they see the flags.
