Beaches and pools in Charlottesville and Albemarle County are opening just in time for Memorial Day weekend.
Starting Saturday, swimming beaches at Chris Greene, Walnut Creek, and Mint Springs will open for the three-day holiday weekend. Lifeguards are on duty from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The parks and recreation department offers season passes.
"It's a lot closer to home. You don't have to burn all that gas. We've got over 300 tons of brand-new sand at all three of our beaches. We've done a lot of sprucing up, spring cleaning,” said Tim Hughes, with Albemarle County Parks and Recreation.
Beaches are open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend except when Albemarle County schools are in session, so daily swimming actually begins June 13.
Charlottesville will open its two outdoor pools, Onesty Family Aquatic Center and Washington Park Pool, for the 2014 summer season Saturday. For each outdoor pool, families looking to cool off can either pay a daily fee or purchase season passes.
After this weekend, both pools will close during the week and only operate on weekends, but daily hours begin June 7.
