Students Gear Up For Books on Bikes Event

Posted: Updated:

Many students are counting down the days left in the school year, but with summer right around the corner it means less reading for some students. Now, one Charlottesville school is making sure that doesn't happen. Clark Elementary School is gearing up for its annual "Books on Bikes" event.

It's a way to get books to students during the summer when the school's library is closed.  Groups of students and parents pile a load of books into a wagon and wheel them to neighborhoods around the school. The books are then given away to kids.

This year, the group is using a kickstarter campaign to raise money for the event. They hope to purchase bikes with the money, which will make it easier and faster for students to make deliveries.

"During the summer we worry about students not reading and losing that they've gained in the previous school year," said third grade teacher Kellie Keyser. "To help prevent that summer slide, we want to bring books and have them reading in their home and excited about reading during the summer months."

The students hope to purchase three cargo bikes with the money raised, so far they have raised $5,340.  Even though they have surpassed their goal of $5,000, students hope the extra money will pay for one more bike. The online campaign ends Wednesday, May 21.  Click here for more information.
