A dentist in Crozet is footing the bill for people who need dental work, but who don't have the money to pay for it. Dr. John Schoeb, the owner of Crozet Blue Ridge Dental, is hosting "Crozet Dental Day" Saturday May 17.
Dr. Schoeb said the idea started several years ago when he was talking to one of his patients about the economy. The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, told Dr. Schoeb she wanted to help people struggling to pay for dental care. That's when she had Dr. Schoeb open a bank account where the woman deposited thousands of dollars over the years to help pay for the care. Now, Dr. Schoeb said he wants to devote an entire day to helping others.
"We're going to open our doors and do free exams, free oral cancer screening, free X-rays and free extractions, to those people in our community who are in need," Dr. Schoeb said.
He said the event is a community-wide effort. An oral surgeon in Crozet is volunteering at the event and a Charlottesville-based dentist is lending equipment for it. The owner of Dominos in Crozet is pitching in free pizzas for all of the volunteers.
The event runs Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. It's first come first served. Dr. Schoeb said no appointment is necessary. Crozet Blue Ridge Dental is located at 5974 Jarmans Gap Road in Crozet.
