Work to build a new Costco store in Albemarle County could begin by the end of this month. County planners say things are moving smoothly for the proposed store at the Shops at Stonefield.
You're not likely to see a building anytime soon - there's a lot of landscaping work that has to happen first - but county officials say all that could start before this month ends.
Albemarle County approved Costco's site plan back in the fall. The store is expected to be built at the north end of the Shops at Stonefield. County officials say unless the store runs into financial problems with the contractors, all indications are that construction will be a go.
“I could see the site work beginning within the month. I think it will be the fall before you see something, at the earliest before you see something coming out of the ground,” said Mark Graham, director of community development.
Graham says the store could be open early next year.
They will have to move the stormwater pit to a different spot, because the store's set to go in right where that pit is currently located. District Avenue, the road that runs around the Shops at Stonefield is also going to have to move.
We have reached out to Costco to see where they believe the work stands, but we have yet to hear back.
