WAYNESBORO, Va (WVIR) -

A Waynesboro man is facing felony charges after attacking two women who were trying to stop him from stealing property from their home Monday morning.

Devin Mergenthaler, 30, was caught by police near the 100 block of McPheeters Road outside Staunton after attempting to flee the scene.

It all happened after two women say they returned home to find a suspicious SUV in the driveway and then saw Mergenthaler taking property from the home. Police say the women tried to stop Mergenthaler but he then attacked the women, sending one to the hospital.

Mergenthaler is charged with breaking and entering, felony assault, robbery, grand larceny, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held at Middle River Regional Jail.
