A suspect is taken into custody
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
05/10 UPDATE: The suspect detained during the standoff is still in police custody. There is no word yet on what charges he may be facing.
Albemarle County police have a suspect in custody Friday night after a standoff along Route 29 at the Brown Collision Center.
The call came in about 6:30 p.m. for multiple shots fired on Berkmar Drive near Seminole Trail (Route 29). Later, witnesses at Brown, which is on Seminole Trail, say an armed man went into Brown. An employee who saw him locked the door to keep the man inside.
One witness, Tyler Sprouse, says he was there about the moment the suspect ran into Brown. He says he heard some people yelling followed by one man chasing another with a gun.
"So the first guy passed the shop, the second guy came in with the firearm and laid down on the floor so the guy who is in the shop shut the door, ran to the front, locked the door behind him,” Sprouse said.
NBC29 also spoke with Matt Conrad of Crozet, who was driving by the area when the shots rang out.
"We heard seven to eight. It was like a loud snapping noise almost so it was definitely like a smaller caliber pistol of what I could know,” Conrad said.
After that, Conrad says he saw a number of people running from the area.
SWAT teams joined police officers and crisis negotiators for the standoff that lasted for about four and a half hours. Shortly before 10:30 p.m., police led the shirtless suspect out of the building, as a crowd across the street near Fashion Square Mall cheered.
Albemarle police continue to investigate and any charges against the suspects are still pending.
