Staunton Police Investigate Body Found in Gypsy Hill Park
Police on the scene at Gypsy Hill Park.
Staunton police are investigating an apparent homicide. The body of a young man was found at Gypsy Hill Park Thursday morning.
Staunton police say they cannot say right now whether or not this poses any threat to the community. Until the Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke positively identifies the body, we will not know the name of the victim or the cause of death.
We do not know how the apparent victim, a white male in his twenties, was killed, but Public Information Officer Jennifer Stevens with the Staunton Police Department says investigators will not rest until they find the answers.
"They’re working the investigation right now. It's still ongoing. We're still waiting on a positive identification on the body. That has not been done yet," Stevens said.
Staunton police, state police, and a bloodhound with the Augusta County Sheriff's Office hunted for clues and collected evidence since the call came in around 8 a.m. Thursday.
"The body was located by a Parks and Rec employee who was getting ready to start mowing grass," Stevens said.
Police will not comment on any apparent wounds until an autopsy is completed. While police have reached out to the likely family members, the identity will also not be released until the body is positively identified by the Medical Examiner.
The possible risk to the community is also an unknown.
"That would be speculation, too. We have no answers to those right now. We are working it as an apparent homicide and that's all we've got at this moment," Stevens said.
According to Stevens, no arrests have been made in the case. She says there's a long way to go before that would happen. Staunton Police Department Press Release
