Albemarle Board Approves Reallocation of Funds to Support Bright Stars Program

Posted: Updated:

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors has approved a reallocation of funds to support the Bright Stars program in county schools. Bright Stars is a school readiness program that was in jeopardy this year as a result of a $7 million school funding gap.

That program employs 14 and a half full time teachers and social workers.

Supervisor Jane Dittmar says funding this program is a necessity. "We need to bridge the gap for a year and make sure that it's funded. We don't want the teachers that are funded by the school board or the social workers that we have not to continue to work with these children," she stated.

The funds are coming from a raise reduction for county employees. Dittmar says the reduction is part of a salary matching tradition with the school system. "We do have a standing tradition, that I don't know if we would be willing to move away from, of making sure that the same types of employees in the school division are paid the same way that the employees in the general government area are paid." she stated.

Supervisors have pledged to provide $289,000 in funding to get them through this year. A long-term plan for the program is still in the works.
