The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors is expected to approve a lease Wednesday that will bring a new chapter of the Boys & Girls Club to Scottsville.

Right now many families in Scottsville take their kids all the way to Charlottesville to go to the Boys & Girls club every day. But that could change by June 15. The club is starting its sixth central Virginia site this summer, opening June 15 at the Scottsville Community Center.

James Pierce, the executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Central Virginia, says the new location will serve children from Buckingham, Albemarle, and Fluvanna counties. He says he's expecting about 100 kids in those three counties to join.

Albemarle supervisors are expected to approve a lease for the new club Wednesday morning.

“A Boys & Girls club can bring a little bit of a different element of youth development to the area,” Pierce said.

To sweeten the deal, the county will be leasing the property to the Boys & Girls Club for next to nothing. The club will pay just $1 a year in rent. Meanwhile, the Boys & Girls Club is preparing for $100,000 in upgrades to the facilities, and residents say that’s good for everyone.

“It sounds like it's going to be a really good thing, hopefully that'll be a really good partnership for this community,” said Nikki Chambless, who lives in Scottsville.

Just like the other chapters of the club, the new site will be a summer camp for June, July and August, and registration for that opens next Monday. Once school starts, it'll have after school care every day.
