Five Fluvanna County athletes announced their college decisions Thursday
FLUVANNA COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
It was a packed house at Fluvanna County High School Thursday, as five Fluco athletes announced their college decision.
Jesse Vandyke will play wide receiver at Division III Emory & Henry in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference next season, after four years on the gridiron at Fluvanna.
Vandyke says, "I feel like I'm about to restart my four years. Ninth grade, when I first started football, it was pretty tough. I was a little weakling, kinda, and now I'm about to restart that entire thing going to college."
Emily Haden will continue her volleyball career at Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach.
"I just started volleyball in 8th grade on a whim," says Haden. "I wanted to try it out. In freshman year I started taking it seriously, and it's a dream for me to play in college."
Dylan Garrett says he's looking forward to continuing his pole vaulting career at Mary Washington.
"I'm super happy," says Garrett. "I'm just ready to compete, and see what I got, and see what the coaches got for me too."
Nikki Douma will run cross country at Longwood, and says the ability to concentrate on academics put the Lancers program over the top.
"Their nursing program really sealed the deal for me," says Douma. "It's kind of an extra bonus that they happen to not have a track team, so that will give me more time to focus on my academics during the winter and spring."
Matt Fragola was a member of the first-ever varsity lacrosse team at Fluvanna County three-years ago, and by signing a scholarship with Emmanuel College, he's breaking new ground again.
Fragola says, "It's pretty exciting to be the first person to play college lacrosse. We had two other people play at the club level. It's pretty exciting to be the first. Hopefully my other teammates can follow the path and go play college lacrosse also."
