One accomplished Monticello High School student is one of only 26 people nationwide to receive a prestigious college scholarship.
MHS senior Sean Means is now the first student from central Virginia to receive the Ron Brown Scholarship of $40,000 toward college tuition.
Means has a 4.6 GPA, is on the varsity football team, and is competing in a national debate competition - but he says it was his service to his peers that made him stand out as an applicant.
"I would do well in class and somebody would come up to me and ask, and I was like 'OK, well I can help you with this, I can help you with that,' and then it just kept expanding. I think that's the biggest thing is not just, I think that's kind of what leadership is about too, not just standing in the front of the line, but sometimes standing in the back and helping push people forward,” said Means.
Means says he attributes his success partly to his mother, who raised him and his two siblings herself.
He will be attending Stanford University in the fall.
