The Carson Raymond Foundation is in the final phase of renovating a baseball field for little leaguers in Albemarle County to enjoy. A team of volunteers took advantage of a warm Sunday to work on final details at the Brownsville Elementary School diamond. This is the fifth field renovation project for the foundation.

People from several organizations pitched in to give kids a chance to play baseball and remember a little boy who loved the sport.

“We decided to continue his story and his legacy by helping kids go play, specifically baseball. That was his favorite sport,” said John Raymond, Carson's father.

Carson was nine years old when he died of complications with the swine flu in 2009. The foundation in his name has been keeping his memory alive ever since, through projects like building new sports fields.

“He was just such a people person and loved his little friends and loved baseball so it seemed like a combination to provide space and then funding for kids to be able to participate,” Raymond said.

Sunday, a group of Albemarle High School varsity baseball players and members from the University of Virginia's Athletes for Hope stopped by to help the foundation.

“For the past month, we've installed a new backstop, built new dug outs and today we're spreading dirt, and painting the dug outs - finishing up the work we started,” said board member Darren Lynch.

It's hard labor that will soon benefit teams like the Peachtree Little League.

“It's important to give kids an opportunity to play athletics, to play baseball in particular so that's what's most important to us,” Lynch said.

“The best part is the end result, to actually see kids playing on the field,” Raymond said. “The Woodbrook field which is near my house, I go there all the time with my sons to play baseball, and often times we're there when there's tee-ball games, and it's just great to see the kids out enjoying our labor.”

The first field built was at Woodbrook Elementary, where Carson went to school. The foundation also supports leagues in the area by holding baseball clinics at different schools.
