ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
A group of Monticello High School students showed off their poetry skills in a friendly competition. The sixth annual Poetry Slam was held in the school's media center Friday afternoon.
Students read their original poems and were given scores by some of their peers. The event started in the school's creative writing class.
“I think it's just so wonderful to see students engaged in self-expression. They are developing skills that are essential for the future, including communication skills and of course writing skills, and it's just great to have their voices heard,” said Taylor Blackburn, creative writing teacher at MHS.
The winning poem, called "A Justification," was written and performed by freshman Audrey Parks.
There was also a non-competitive open mic part of the event.
The slam is a way to celebrate National Poetry Month.
