To celebrate Arbor Day, a white oak in Charlottesville was designated as a landmark Friday.

The Charlottesville Albemarle Airport put up a fence around a 250-year-old tree in March 2013 to protect it. Some were concerned about the restricted access, especially when trying to take pictures of it, but now there are signs explaining how to get a closer view.

Friday, the Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards added their landmark tree sign to the fence, designating the tree as beautiful, healthy and historic.

"The shape the health of the tree, the fact that it's an oak is particular to me because oaks are just known as being strong and majestic,” said JoAnn Dalley, Charlottesville tree steward.

The tree stewards say the great white oak is now the third-largest in the state and it's one of just a few landmark trees in the area.
