Spring weather means it's time for sheep to shed their winter coat. Saturday was the annual Shearing of the Sheep at James Monroe's Ash Lawn Highland. About 50 people came out to see how wool is removed in a tradition dating back thousands of years.

This year, Ash Lawn welcomed three new lambs to the flock.

Executive Director Sara Bon-Harper says the shearing is an interactive way to bring the plantation's history to life.

“Our idea in making this a public event is sharing a little bit of daily life from the past,” she said. “You know a lot of people from today are aware of the production of wool and fiber and so forth, but sheep shearing is not something that we all get to see.”

Visitors also got to learn how wool is cleaned and eventually spun into fabric. It can also be used as an effective fertilizer for crops, clumping together nutrients in the soil.
