The #1 UVa baseball team beat North Carolina 3-2 Friday night at Davenport Field to take Game One of the 3-game series.

Brandon Downes hit a 2-run home run in the second inning, and had all three of Virginia's RBI.

Downes says, "It's really exciting to have one run leads and hold them with our defense and pitching. It's a big confidence booster."

UVa starting pitcher Nathan Kirby pitched 7.2 innings and struck out 12 batters.

Kirby (8-1) gave up just six hits and allowed two earned runs while earning his ACC-leading 8th win of the season.Head coach Brian O'Connor says, "I'm really proud of Nathan Kirby. Obviously he's pretty locked in, and continues week-after-week to pitch at a very, very high level, and show he's a high-quality Friday night starter. He was terrific tonight."

Nick Howard recorded his 12th save of the season by striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Howard says, "It's definitely a learning experience for this team, being in these one run games, especially to get that experience for the postseason, because that's postseason baseball. I think we're glad we're getting these wins, but we'd also like to get some comfortable ones."

Virginia improves to 32-6, 15-4 in the ACC.

Virginia and North Carolina play again Saturday at 1pm.
