A Schuyler man is dead following a crash on Route 6 in Albemarle County.

Investigators say Randolph Wood Junior, 35, was killed when his pick-up truck veered off the road and struck a tree. It happened just before 11 p.m. Thursday, near Paces Store Road in Esmont.

Two lanes of Route 6 were closed for nearly three hours.

The crash remains under investigation, but speed was likely a factor.

Albemarle County Police Department Press Release

The Albemarle County Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Thursday, April 17th at 10:46 p.m.

An older model Ford pickup truck was traveling west in the 3100 block of Irish Road. The vehicle drove off the right side of the highway and struck a tree head-on. The driver, Randolph Wood Jr., died at the scene as a result of the crash. He was 35 years old from Schuyler, Virginia in Albemarle County. Wood was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Speed is likely a causation factor but the crash remains under investigation by the Crash Reconstruction Team. This is the second fatal crash this year in Albemarle County. There were 11 fatal crashes in 2013.
