Canoe Tips on James in Scottsville, Spills Five People

Posted: Updated:

Five people, including three children, are thanking their lucky stars after high drama on the James River.

Thursday afternoon, their canoe tipped over into the chilly, fast moving water, but police say everyone was OK.

Police got a call for help around 1:30 p.m. by one man in the group who made it to shore. Albemarle County police and Virginia Conservation Police, Lake Monticello Water Rescue, and the Scottsville Fire Department responded to rescue the other people. All were found on an island in the middle of the river not too far away.

"Scottsville Fire Department provided a water rescue boat, which took off at Hatten Ferry and traveled upriver and they were able to get the four subjects that were on the island loaded in the boat and brought back down here to Warren Ferry,” said Virginia Conservation Police Officer Paul Inge.

Police say the river is higher due to the recent rainfall, which makes it dangerous for boating.

Police say they're talking with the group about the conditions on the river that led to the accident, and asking whether they had safety equipment with them.
