Frmr Western Albemarle Teacher Charged with Online Solicitation of Minor

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) - A former teacher at Western Albemarle High School faces charges for online solicitation of a minor.

The Augusta County Sheriff's Office arrested 66-year-old John Daniel Patterson Junior Tuesday in Verona after he arrived at a location where he thought he was meeting a 13-year-old boy. It was actually an investigator posing as the boy online.

An Albemarle County spokesperson says Patterson worked for Albemarle County Schools, teaching social studies from 1972 - 2000.  Patterson also formerly owned a flower shop in the Crozet area.

He is being held without bond at the Middle River Regional Jail.

On Tuesday, April 15th, 2014, an online solicitation of a minor investigation was underway and Deputy Donald Moran of the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office was conducting the investigation and posing online as a 13-year-old male. Moran posted an ad online and was contacted by an unknown male. This online encounter and the resulting communications soon turned sexual in nature and led to an agreement arranging a meeting for a sexual liaison in Verona, Virginia.

At 1400 HRS on April 15, the male suspect arrived at the agreed to location and he was taken into custody without incident. He was identified as: John Daniel Patterson Jr., a 66 year old male who resides in Waynesboro, Virginia. Patterson was arrested, interviewed and taken before the State Magistrate and charged with violation of the following Virginia codes:

§ 18.2-374.3. Use of communications systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children and § 18.2-26/18.2-370. Attempt to, while being 18 years of age or over, with lascivious intent, knowingly and intentionally propose an act of sexual intercourse or an act constituting and offense under §18.2-361, to a 13 year old male.

Patterson was ordered held without bond and remanded to the Middle River Regional Jail.
