Ivy Material Utilization Center Risks Being Shut Down

Posted: Updated:
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -

An Albemarle County trash transfer station could soon be shut down.

Supervisor Liz Palmer says, while she would like to see the open-air Ivy Material Utilization Center stay open, it's costing the county big bucks. The station is not meeting Department of Environmental Quality standards.

Palmer says the county would need to pour some cash into the station in order to keep it open.

"Commercial haulers can bring their trash and commercial businesses can bring their trash, a lot of those places have started going out to Fluvanna, so they've lost a lot of business and in the trash business volume is very important to make your numbers work,” said Palmer.

Supervisors are waiting to hear back from the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority Director who will tell the board how much it will cost to get the station up to standards.
