The Virginia men's lacrosse team lost a high-scoring shootout at Klockner Stadium Friday night, as #2 Duke beat #8 UVa 17-15.
The Cavaliers have lost six games in a row against Duke, and 14 of the last 15.
The Wahoos are now 8-5 this season after losing their third-straight match.
Head coach Dom Starsia says, "I told the kids afterwards, 'We're close. We're right there. We're getting better.' The last two weeks I feel like we played the two best teams that we've seen all year, and we've battled them down to the wire. We have to keep playing and getting better, and hope we get another opportunity."
Virginia is now 1-4 in the ACC.
Chris LaPierre said, "When we won the national championship back in 2011, we were the last place team in the ACC. Ultimately, we're looking at the big picture. All we have to do is get back to work, and hopefully make a run."
James Pannell led the Cavaliers with a hat trick.
Duke scored 17 goals on 34 shots, while Virginia needed 53 shots for its 15 goals.
The Blue Devils won 22 of the 35 faceoffs in the game.
With the loss, UVa secures either fifth or sixth place in the ACC and will play in the "Showcase Game" on Saturday, April 26 at the ACC Championship.
The top four teams in the league will play in the ACC Tournament semifinals Friday, April 25th.
UVa will host Bellermine in its regular season finale next Saturday at one o'clock.
