The #2 Virginia baseball team took down #14 Clemson 3-2 Friday in a Top-20 showdown at Davenport Field.
"I can't tell you that I really love the way the college game is played right now," said Head coach Brian O'Connor. "Quite frankly with the lack of offense. But what it lends itself to is very close ball games when there's two really good teams."
UVa's pitchers, Nathan Kirby, Whit Mayberry and Nick Howard combined on a five-hitter as the Cavaliers improved to 29-5 overall and 13-3 in the ACC.
After coming off a no-hitter against Pitt, UVa's Kirby worked the mound for six innings giving up two earned runs, four hits ,and three walks, while striking out six.
Kirby said, "After we got the third run, that definitely gives me a level of comfort out there. It makes it a lot easier to throw the ball down the middle of the plate."
Mayberry pitched two scoreless innings before Nick Howard entered to pitch a perfect ninth inning to ice the 'Hoos 3-2 victory.
Howard collected his ACC-leading 10th save on the season.
The series continues Saturday, with the first pitched scheduled for 2:30 PM.
