Berlin Wall Panels Unveiled at UVA

Posted: Updated:

A piece of the Berlin Wall is now on display at the University of Virginia.

Friday kicked off the official unveiling of the four panels from the Berlin Wall outside Alderman Library at UVA.

The panels contain some unique graffiti on them that commemorate freedom. They contain "Kings of Freedom" graffiti artwork by artist Dennis Kaun. The images depict a brightly colored and joyful king representing freedom next to a drab blindfolded king seemingly oblivious to the wishes of his people.

“We have this other icon of both oppression and eventually freedom that marks the wall coming down separating the German peoples and I think it's absolutely remarkable that we have it here,” said Jody Kielbasa, vice provost for arts.

The panels are on loan to UVA from Robert and Meili Hefner.

In 1989, Hefner sensed the historical enormity of the people of East and West Germany tearing down the Berlin Wall and secured four panels.

Events and programs about the Berlin Wall will be announced throughout the year. Things will culminate during a celebration on November 9 - the 25th anniversary of the toppling of the wall.
